The first time you become a mom, you will probably be shocked to discover that it’s like nothing you imagined it to be. Instead of buying all the things I thought I needed for a baby, it would have been nice if my mom could have warned me about the sleepless nights, midnight feedings, and being covered in spit-up.  

These tips for new moms that I wish I had known earlier were exactly what I needed.

Becoming a parent for the first time is an exciting yet daunting experience. There are many things to look forward to, as well as things to be concerned about. Make sure you have all the baby stuff. Besides postpartum supplies, don’t forget about all that you need to take in baby classes, such as CPR. 

It’s important to remember that no matter how well-prepared you are, there may be some things about your new mom role that you didn’t expect. So, these first-time mom tips will help.

It’s okay not to be in love with the baby at first

It’s perfectly fine if you don’t immediately warm up to your new arrival. There’s a lot that your body and mind have to adjust to in the first few weeks. You just gave birth to a tiny little human. The mind boggles. Many first-time parents find that they aren’t instantly overwhelmed with love for their baby, but that belief is normal.

My entire pregnancy was a huge blessing, and I loved my baby from the moment she was conceived. Talking to her, singing to her, and feeling every little twist and turn were terrific experiences. I couldn’t wait for the day when I get to meet her!

But when I held her for the first time, I realized that while I was excited and thrilled to finally hold her in my arms, something didn’t feel right.

Like most new parents, I was unprepared for how completely a tiny baby could take over your life.

I resisted this for years. Now that she’s 11, it seems very normal for me to talk about it. The confidence I now have when talking about it to other first-time moms helps them to relax, knowing that they are not alone and go through this at the same time.

In the excitement of welcoming a new baby, we were fantasizing about what our little bundle of joy will be like. 

We buy the best baby clothes and imagine dressing them up. We decide to take the baby on loads of photoshoots and can’t wait to have friends come over so they can scream at how cute it is.

But the reality is, you bring home a tiny bundle that depends on you for everything and cries when you leave. Instead of instant love, there’s near-panic about whether you’re doing everything right.

Oh, the joys of parenthood. As many parents can attest, your kid doesn’t care about your hard days at work or what you have to say. They just want food, lots of love, and as much time outside as possible. This parenting thing is a lot of work!

Sometimes, you’re so exhausted you don’t think you can take care of your newborn baby any longer.

Trust me; It is hard. Parenting is among the hardest jobs in the world. Many parents feel like they have no social life or time for themselves. They often feel alone and frustrated. I wish someone had told me about all these things before I became a parent.

Women are natural nurturers, and if you’re worried you don’t love your new baby, try to remember this is NORMAL! Everyone feels a little detached and overwhelmed in the first few weeks after their bundle of joy arrives. Remember, everyone does it, and you won’t always feel this way.

Though the first few months of motherhood can be an emotional rollercoaster, you’re sleep-deprived, hormonal, and spend a lot of time cleaning vomit off your formerly favorite sweater. While it can be tough to navigate sometimes, you’re not alone. Most moms feel the same way during those first few months.

But that changes as you get used to being a parent.

 Asking for help is okay.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that you can do everything yourself -after all, this is your first baby! “I remember thinking that I was a superwoman.”

After you give birth, you may be eager to get back to life as it was before your baby was born. It’s normal to feel this way, but it can sometimes lead new moms to forget just how much their body has gone through.

I had an absolutely amazing, pain-free birth. It was incredible and empowering, and I’m so glad I did it.

But despite all of that, My body was in so much pain, and I was so weak. My bones crack, and my muscles ache. No joke.

It hurt to walk. Even the simplest tasks like vacuuming were a struggle. I would find myself limping around with a bad back and soreness.

In all sorts of ways, sometimes big, sometimes small. When anyone offers to help you out, don’t hesitate to accept their offer. Family is important, and they will do anything for you, take the time to let them help you. 

A mom who has been there is likely to be there for you, because she knows how difficult it is. So find your tribe and band together - help each other out, and then pay it forward when you have a baby of your own.

Remember, talk to people who have raised kids. It seems like everyone has been through it before, and they’ve probably learned their tips, tricks, and secrets. There's no shame in asking for help or advice. Getting ready for the little person that is about to join your family can be a fun and exciting experience!

 

When Sleep is Lost, Everything is Lost

As a new mother, a good night's sleep is important, and it is often hard to achieve. When it's 3 am, and your baby is crying in the middle of the night, you'll finally understand the true meaning of "beauty sleep."

When you’re a new parent, sleep is extremely hard to come by. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get a few hours here and there. And most of the time, you will just lie there watching your baby sleep.

As a new mom, your days are filled with late-night feedings and learning how to change diapers on a squirming infant.

You have probably heard that babies sleep for a long time in the first few months of their life. However, you may not know just how drastically your life will change as a result. After all, your priorities are likely to change drastically as well, and the person most affected by the changes is you.

While babies do sleep a lot in those first few weeks, they also wake up every two hours. So while you can get 8 hours of sleep a day, it is broken into 2 hour time increments. This means that you will rarely be in a deep sleep and will not be reaching REM sleep.

The first few weeks are very exhausting, and you'll feel like it's never going to end.

But it will. 

The best advice I can give is to, just give it time. Patience is key. Most babies start sleeping through the night after a few weeks or months of hard work. With a little persistence, you’ll be re-energized and relaxed.

It's true what they say: Moms are the best.

Moms know their babies best. So trust your instincts. It goes without saying that you are the best one to know your baby. Just make sure you have the tools and knowledge you need to be a successful mom.

No one’s there to hold your hand when the baby won’t stop crying, and you have a million other things you need to do. You have a million other battles to fight – battles like sleep deprivation, dirty diapers, cleaning up the messes you didn’t know could exist in the world.

Just go with your gut. 

Take advice from other moms—many of their suggestions are great. But understand that sometimes their methods won’t work. Your baby might respond to a different routine, schedule, or approach.

If something seems wrong with your child, don’t ignore those feelings. Moms know their kids best, so trust your instincts.
